Coral
Jewelry

CORAL
jewelry was thought in Victorian times to
promote good health and it was often worn by young children for this
reason.
Coral is also associated with the boundless sea and with longevity.

VICTORIAN coral carved segments bracelet
with square rosette and carved bar stations, yellow gold fittings, 7-1/3" by 7/16". In
the Victorian era, wearing coral was thought to promote good health.

VICTORIAN
parure of coral beads set in 10 karat yellow gold with applied
and engraved designs circa 1880.
Each piece has beautifully fashioned gold leaves and berries that hold
the stick coral. The bracelet is four
strands of coral beads with a coral bead catch, 7" long and has a safety chain. The larger brooch has a
three foxtails and a watch hook on the back,
1-1/2"; the smaller brooch is 3/4"; earrings are 14k screw backs which
were probably replaced in the early 1900’s and are 7/8";
the ring is size 7. These are a mix of karat gold and gold filled, with
the clasps and brooch fronts being 10k, the ring shank 14k and the
fittings and earrings backs gold filled. Sets with this many matching
pieces are very scarce and this is a real treasure.
In the Victorian era, wearing coral was
thought to promote good health. A set almost identical to this can be seen in "Jewelry in
America, 1600-1900" by Martha Gandy Fales on page 245.

"I was thrilled to see the coral earrings in their original box. "G" was George
Butterworth, my great uncle. He was apprenticed in his home town of Rochdale as
a gold and silver worker when he left school, setting up in Shipley, Yorkshire
where he was later joined by his brother (my grandfather) in 1900. They then
traded as Butterworth Brothers (but might have used up existing boxes of
course). I have attached an image of G Butterworth. The photo was taken in 1900
when he was 27." With kind regards, Louise Butterworth, Butterworth
Brothers
